NEW: Phased Array Inspection
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing or Phased Array Inspection is an advanced NDT method that can be used for a wide range of different inspection tasks. Phased Array Testing is capable of meeting the higher demands of advanced industries and services that we work with.
The use of a Phased Array allows for more complex shapes to be tested on site or within our laboratory. We are happy to advise whether your requirements suit a regular Ultrasonic test or whether you require Phased Array.
The Benefits Of Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing
- Faster testing compared to manual methods
- Reliable testing method
- Instant and computerised results
- Data is permanently recorded for future inspection
- No radiation or environmental hazards compared to radiography
- Both on-site inspection and specialised testing facility

What Is Phased Array Inspection Used For
Phased Array Inspection is used to detect flaws that couldn’t be easily detected by conventional non-destructive testing methods such as Radiography or manual Ultrasonic Testing.
Phased Array Ultrasonic technology can provide accurate and precise flaw data that can be used in a range of inspection tasks such as structural assessment, fitness-for-service assessments, flaw analysis and engineering critical assessments.
Phased Array Ultrasonic testing is used in a variety of advanced industries and sectors, including Oil and Gas, Power Generation, Aeronautical, chemical industries and the construction of new pipelines.
The Advantages Of Phased Array Inspection Over Other Testing Methods
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing has several advantages over other NDT techniques such as radiographic testing. Firstly, it allows for a significantly faster examination compared to manual ultrasonic testing. In addition, the results can be computerised and displayed in a variety of formats, such as A, B, C and D scans, which allows for more accurate interpretations of any flaws.
A further benefit to Phased Array Inspection is the lack of any radiation or environmental hazards that you would have with Radiographic Testing. There is no need to shut down operations due to radiation exposure with Phased Array testing, reducing any worker downtime.
How Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing Works
Phased Array Ultrasonic testing makes use of a phased array probe that is made up of multiple small ultrasonic transducers. Each of these transducers can be made to pulse individually, this allows certain parameters such as angle, focal distance and focal point size to be controlled via software.
A technician can “steer” the ultrasonic beam to a specific angle and focal distance by varying the timing of each individual transducer’s pulse. This allows the ultrasonic beam to be swept through the examined object.
On-site NDT Services Available UK Wide
Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing is one of the latest NDT services provided by Capital NDT. Our team of trained technicians are able to carry out Phased Array inspections at both our testing facility and on-site across the UK.
All of our NDT technicians are all qualified with industry recognised PCN (Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing) in accordance with BS EN ISO 9712. Our testing facility is also accredited by a number of well-known bodies, such as ADIPS.
